7 Steps to Survive the First 7 Days of Heroin withdrawal
by “John Doe”, Seasoned Heroin Addict as told to Cali Estes, The Addictions Coach
There are some basic steps (that aren’t my creation) that have been passed down recently that to the non-user may sound basic and even simple, but to the person going through complete detox they are some of the hardest decisions and actions that they will ever make.
Step 1: Come clean to the person or people who are closest to you in life. You need to know you are not alone.
This is for two reasons. One, the complete burden of trying to get through these 7 days is not solely on you. Two, so there is a set of eyes on you at all times, to help you get through this.
Step 2: ERASE ALL NUMBERS in your phone that have anything to do with Heroin and even change your number if needed.
Step 3: Stock up on OTC items that fight the withdrawal symptoms such as Sprite, Imodium AD, Tagamet, Ginger Ale, Soup, Dayquil and Nyquil. The physical symptoms are the primary reason people relapse.
Step 4: Might be the hardest thing to do the first week. This step is to walk, jog or even run as much as possible. This gets the natural endorphins firing again and takes your mind off just lying around feeling like crap!
Step 5: Take as many HOT baths or showers as necessary. Hot water can take almost every physical withdrawal symptom away momentarily.
Step 6: You will do this in the latter part of the first 7 days. Listen to your favorite music. Music stimulates your endorphins and receptors causing the brain to start firing normally again.
Step 7: The final Step 7 is very important. BE PATIENT…DONT RUSH BACK TO LIFE TOO QUICKLY! Rushing back can land you right back to Day 1 if you aren’t ready. Most of us spent weeks, months and years getting physically addicted to Heroin. You will want to give yourself time getting well. In the next 3 weeks you may want to hire a sober coach to help you and keep you accountable to staying clean.
