7 Ways Sugar is as addictive as Drugs like Cocaine and Heroin.

By Cali Estes, The Addictions Coach

Sitting in the car with a box of doughnuts in hand, fresh from the bakery drive-thru can be one of the most rewarding and exhilarating feelings in the world. They smell so good, and taste even better. But eating just one isn’t enough. You have 2 and maybe 3. Then you set them down and come back a few hours later because they are in the house. You finish the box. You feel sick, unhappy, depressed even. Now you are craving more sugar products. What happened? Here are 7 ways that sugar is as addictive as hardcore drugs like heroin and cocaine.

1.       Chemically, sugar pings the brain just like cocaine. That means it affects your reward and pleasure systems just like an addictive hardcore drug. Your brain literally doesn’t know the difference. It just knows it likes it and wants more and more and more. So you think about it, obsess over it. You crave it, just like drugs. AND you are not happy until you have it. Then you feel guilty, remorseful, sad, angry, upset, just like drugs. The cycle – the vicious cycle – has begun.

2.       When you do not have sugar you feel sick. You get a headache, you feel tired, lethargic, depressed.  You don’t want to work out, go out, or do much. Your head pounds. You are detoxing, just like heroin. Sure you may not be vomiting and have the sweats and the chills but you are definitely coming off of the drug, sugar. Your body craves it, wants it. You think, just a little and I will feel better, just to rid myself of this headache. Then a little becomes a lot. Just like drugs.

3.       You obsess when you do not have sugar. You think about candy, cake, cookies, ice cream. Your thoughts during the day revolve around when you can go to the vending machine for the snickers bar, the can of soda or the handful of chocolate you have on your desk.  You want it and you want it often. Denying yourself of it only makes the obsessive and racing thoughts get louder, just like cocaine.

4.       You plan your entire day around when you can have it. You might drive home from work the long way just to go through the drive thru and get an ice cream or a latte. You plan events that involve dessert or gatherings where sugar is present. You may offer to bring the cake to the party, so you can be sure there is dessert available. This is similar to the way a drug addict plans their route to go by the dealers house and ‘just happen to be in the neighborhood’ when they want to buy heroin or cocaine.

5.       You swear you are going to ‘go off sugar’ and you are not going to touch it again. Just like getting a white chip, it sounds good now, after you’ve had 6 doughnuts and feel sick. But once you are not full and sick of the sweets you rethink that decision and say ‘just one more cookie, one more candy, one more lollipop then I swear I won’t touch it’. The same thing happens when we decide to get sober, we make a pact, we set forth the rules and then, inevitably we relapse and start all over. Sugar is no different. We crave it, we want it. Sugar is both chemically and emotionally just as addictive as drugs. AND it is in everything.

6.       You try everything, you drink tea, chew on a straw, buy a lotto ticket, smoke a cigarette, anything to get your mind off sugar. But it creeps in, just like drugs, you are emotionally and now physically addicted. You can’t stop the inner chatter or the physical detox. It is annoying, it is painful and it can be stopped with just one candy bar. You rationalize. “It is legal, it is not that bad, you can’t make me quit this too, everyone has sugar, I am not that fat so what is the issue?” and on and on and on. You talk yourself right into the sugar snack. Game on, the cycle continues.

7.       You tie your emotions to the eating process. You may trade drugs for sugar or be a true food addict where you feel guilty while binging on the snacks. You eat over the sink, you hide snacks in your desk, purse, car, even pockets. You don’t want others to know your ‘dirty little secret’. At meals you eat small portions in front of others but as soon as you leave you stop and buy ice cream to take home and eat.  Just like a drug addict, you won’t want anyone to know. You are embarrassed.

Unlike drugs that you do not need to survive, you do need to eat and sugar seems to be in everything! Going to the grocery store, restaurant or even snack bar is a problem.   We all know that there is sugar in cake, cookies, candy and ice cream but how about pasta sauce? Or yogurt? Tons of sugar!  Sugar is beyond just as addictive as drugs and as a nation we are creating a whole new breed of addict with a legal substance.

So what can you do? All hope is not lost. Start with a realistic version of what you want to accomplish. Do you want to cut back on your sugar consumption or quit altogether? Start a food journal and track your moods and foods, notice when you crave the sweets. Stay full, use nuts, berries, bananas and other fruits to curb the sweet tooth. If you are full and had a sweet piece of fruit, you are less like to reach for cake, candy, cookies and more. The less sugar you eat the better you will feel and as you begin to detox from the sugar if you go back it you will notice it is sweeter and less palatable.

If you need a food addiction coach for added accountability and to hold your hand the through the process we are here! The first two weeks are uncomfortable just like a drug detox, but after that it becomes easier.

mistakes

Dr. Cali Estes: 5 Deadly Mistakes You Make When a Loved One Has an Addiction

1. Sending money and expecting them to pay the rent, electric, food or other bills with the money. An addict in active use will use the cash for drugs or gambling and then call for more money when the eviction notice is slapped on the door. Parents and loved ones panic and try to fix the problem the addict has which results in more money being sent. If you are paying for something, pay it directly. Send a check to the landlord or pay the electric bill directly.  Do not send the addict in active use cash. Send a food card if necessary or take them to the grocery store and buy the food with them.

2. Rescue the Active Addict. The Addict in active use will always be in a state of chaos and call frantic, needing to have an issue handled. Resist the urge to jump in and fix the problem for them. Let them attempt to figure out the issue on their own and struggle.

3. Lack of Self Care.  With focusing on the addict in active addiction, you lose what you need to take care of. Doctors appointments get missed, dinner is not prepared, you find that you are not eating well and sitting up worrying about your loved one. It is imperative that you take care of yourself during this time period. Go to the gym, yoga, for a walk, etc.

4. Allowing your anger to consume you and accusing the addict of ruining your life. They have a ton of shame and guilt around what they are doing and how it is affecting you. They know what is going on. Yelling and screaming and calling them a ‘junkie’ does not help, it magnifies the guilt and causes them to continue to use.

5. Setting consequences and then not following through with them. If you threaten divorce or to throw them out and never do, they have learned to manipulate you and will continue to do so. Whatever you say you will do, make sure you follow through with it.

Nine Ways To Market Yourself as a Professional Coach
Written by Dr. Cali Estes.  As published on Addicted Minds

http://www.addictedminds.com/recovery-coach/nine-ways-to-market-yourself-as-a-professional-coach/

If you want to be successful as a Professional Coach, you must also become a successful marketer of Professional Coaching; unless you are willing to shell out big dollars to hire one. We will share with you the nine keys to becoming successful in marketing yourself as a Professional Coach, if you can master these principles, you will succeed.

Social Media Ads:
Every day your name or the name of your coaching business, your logo, and what you offer needs to be in front of social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram. Pinterest, etc. You should also establish coaching groups within the appropriate sites that you can do so on. You can use a site such as Hootsuite to manage the scheduling of all of your ads and social media sites. You can also make professional video ads on sites such as Viddyad.com to publish where ever you like. Use video, it’d hot right now!

Your Own Exciting, Informational, and Relevant Website:

Websites are crucial to your success in the Professional Coaching business. Unless you are a computer whiz, use a professional to build your website for you. Look at other Professional Coach’s websites to get an idea what your competition has, so that you know what the standard is that your webmaster needs to outshine. Your website needs to be fresh, exciting, and informative. You will need to be able to update your site on a regular basis. Your introduction must be eye-catching to the viewer or they will move on. Your site must stand out from all of the others and establish you as the best of the best! Use video!

Writing Articles and Content on Professional Coaching:
To market yourself or your company successfully you must establish yourself as an expert in the industry of Professional Coaching, one of the best ways is through writing articles and content on Professional Coaching. “Show your knowledge” as a real pro! Write your own content, hire ghost writers, and curate content from companies such as “Scoop-It.” Ghost writers will write articles for you and you can sign your name as the author, this is a great service for those who are too busy to write articles on a regular basis. You should write some articles yourself, just to keep yourself honest! Curation is where you re-publish an article that has already been published from a curation company like “Scoop-It.” It doesn’t matter where you post and publish as long as you do, places with larger audiences are best. Some companies will pay you to write articles and content usually about five cents per word.

Creating a Blog, and Blogging:
Creating your own blog and writing for other companies on their blogs is a wonderful way to continue to establish your professionalism, knowledge, and expertise in the coaching industry. Many companies are looking for experts to write on their blogs and some will even pay you to do so. Make sure to write on your blog on a regular basis, keep it fresh and interesting Invite guest bloggers that are big names in the industry to show how well connected you are with other experts. They would not blog for you if you were not an expert also! You can even have more than one blog and a blog can go right on your website. Use quotes, the latest news, anything exciting and eye-catching. Videos are Hot, Hot, and Hot; use them!

Writing a Book:
Anyone who publishes a book increases their credibility. If you happen to get on the bestsellers list, that is a major feather in your “Expert Cap.” Your book doesn’t have to be a novel, it can be a short how-to book, or anything interesting, that people will buy and read. If your book is on Professional Coaching, that is best.

Establishing Yourself as an Expert in the Professional Coaching Industry:
The goal in everything that you do is to establish yourself as the go-to expert in the Professional Coaching industry. You need to be professional, ethical, and on top of your game at all times. People are watching every move you make in public and private life, always be professional. People are watching especially on social media such as Facebook. Be the expert that you are!

Build a Data Base of Emails of Interested Clients:
Your webmaster can build your website so that it’s automated to give away something to potential clients in exchange for their email information. The site will automatically build a database from the name and email of potential clients who show interest in your free giveaway items. You can offer free e-books, white sheets, pens, stress-balls, anything.

Plan and host a Free Webinar:
Once you have enough names and email addresses in your database, you can plan to do a free webinar for potential clients. Please note, don’t give away too much for free! Tell the potential clients a little bit about Professional coaching, maybe invite a former client who is willing to share for a few minutes on the webinar. Maybe do a Q and A with potential clients and yourself. Sell the potential clients on a planned live event, or a DVD, book, etc. while you have a captive audience at the webinar.

Host a Live Event:
Once you have sold enough seats to have a live event, then you are well on your way to being a successful Professional Coach! All you will need to do now is sell the clients on the next webinar, live event, DVD series, book, etc. at the live event, and count the cash! If you can sell out a live event, you have made it! Remember, you never leave money on the table, one event leads to the next. Get referrals, names and emails, addresses from the people at webinars and live events of friends and family who would benefit from your expert Professional Coaching services.

If you can master these nine Professional Coaching marketing techniques, there is no doubt that you will be well on your way to filling events and making the kind of income that others only dream of. Potential without action gets nowhere! Successful Professional Coaches always follow a business plan that sets them up for success. This is one of those plans! Let’s go coach, your clients are waiting!

The Ten Greatest Reasons to Hire a Professional Coach

The Ten Greatest Reasons to Hire a Professional Coach

sign post -guidance

What is the benefit of hiring a Professional Coach in any field: Life Coach, Business Coach, Fitness Coach, Recovery Coach, Family Recovery Coach, or any other specialized coach?

I get asked this question quite often from both sides of the equation: as an instructor of Professional Master Coaches, and as a successful business woman who utilizes a Professional Coach.  I’ll share with you my top ten reasons why I believe anyone should hire a Professional Coach.

Hello I am Your Coach
Before I share my thoughts with you on the top ten reasons to hire a Professional Coach, I want to define what a Professional Coach is and what they do.

A Professional Coach is:

A highly trained and very skilled individual
A professional with tools to get the job done
A very motivated individual who motivates others
An ethical and responsible person
A caring people person
A very advanced cheerleader
An action-oriented problem solver
A flexible, goal-driven communication specialist
A perception and perspective changer
A blockage buster and solution finder
It’s also important to look at what Professional Coaches are not to truly understand who they really are.

A Professional Coach is not:

A banker or accountant
A therapist or counselor
A sponsor or twelve-step guide
A psychiatrist
A goal or objective setter
A date or romantic interest
A party pal
A person with a conflict of interest in relation to a client
An uneducated or untrained individual
Interested in selfish, unethical, or illegal matters
Now that I have identified what a Professional Coach is and is not, I would like to describe what a coach does.  Coaching is a results and client driven process where the coach assists the client to reach a solution.  It is a development or training process where a client receives support while working towards goals and objectives via specific action plans, where the coach utilizes core competencies, skill sets, and tools to help the client see past blockages and reach solution or meet goals.  There are many different types of coaching:

Coaching Types and Styles:

1. Business Coaching
2. Recovery Coaching
3. Christian Coaching
4. Executive Coaching
5. Life Coaching
6. Financial Coaching
7. Health and Wellness Coaching
8. Fitness coaching
9. Relationship Coaching
10. Personal coaching
11. Family recovery coaching

There are many different types and styles of coaching; the largest difference today is peer coaching and Professional Coaching.  The difference is just like it sounds, peer coaching is peer to peer often volunteer, and Professional Coaching is a highly trained and skilled individual and almost always paid for their services. Professional Coaches use a range of communication skills such as active listening, powerful questioning, paraphrasing, the natural laws of cause and effect, reading body language, tones, and inflections, observation, intuition, action planning, and other activities. Professional Coaching helps an individual to identify their capabilities and skill sets that already exist internally and put them into motion to reach solutions in all coaching fields.

Now I’ve identified what a Professional Coach is and isn’t and what they do. You have to be prepared before you execute; now you’re ready to get the information you’ve been waiting for. What are the ten greatest benefits of hiring these highly trained and skilled individuals?

  • Every problem has a solution because the problem defines the solution; there is perspective and perception problems that block most clients from getting to solutions on their own, Profession Coaches help clients get past these blocks and reach solutions.
  • We all are human, thus we all suffer from the human condition. We all have blind spots; Professional Coaches can help clients can point out areas of weakness that clients miss or don’t see.
  • We all need someone to hold us accountable. Clients can take on greater responsibility by meeting with their coach on action plans with specific time tables and follow-up.
  • A Professional Coach will help redirect the client when they are off track with their action plan. The coach is trained to be flexible; however, to keep the plan moving forward toward solution.
  • A Professional Coach is trained to bring out the very best in the client through communication skills and other coaching techniques. The client won’t just be spinning in circles, but actually, always moving forward toward solution.
  • The coach brings extra talent to the table. When the client sets the goal, then the coach and client brainstorm together to reach solution; there is twice the creativity.
  • We all need spiritual sounding boards in our lives. Even coaches need coaches! I haven’t met a highly successful person yet who doesn’t have a coach!
  • Professional Coaches celebrate all the victories with the client, no matter how big or small. A win is a win!
  • Clients can communicate with their coach in confidence and confidentiality. The coach will always be supportive and non-judgmental. The coach may suggest change; however, it will be in a positive and nurturing way.
  • Professional Coaches get results! They bring out the best in clients and expect the champion from within to show him or herself.

This really is a no brainer!  If you could achieve your goal, increase your bottom line, lose those pounds, win that championship, or at least increase your chances for success, wouldn’t you do what it takes?  Professional Coaches make all the difference!

“I’ve seen the power of Life Coaching firsthand and I know how beneficial it can be.”  Leeza Gibbons

An interventionist is a highly skilled, well-trained professional. To be of maximum benefit to the chemical dependency and mental health fields an interventionist must become an expert in the art of successful interventions for those still sick and suffering and their families. The Addictions Academy of Miami, Florida offers an array of courses to prepare potential interventionists to become experts in their field. The following are the Academy’s ten top secrets to becoming an expert interventionist.

  1. To be the best, you need to be trained by the best!

Let’s be honest, if you don’t care who trains you as an interventionist, it’s a crap shoot as to your success in training and skills. You should do your research and find highly skilled professionals with years of experience in the field of interventions. The best instructors are not people who read books; they are professionals who have the experience in the field that can show you the different techniques to be successful. The Addictions Academy’s instructors have many years experience in the field and have had hundreds of successful interventions using different methods and techniques.

  1. An interventionist has to be prepared before they execute.

Successful interventionists plan out their interventions. An intervention should never be rushed or spontaneous; it should be carefully planned out usually at least a week from the original call. The interventionist’s transportation, and lodging, needs to be set up, as well as the date, time, and location of the intervention.   A contract needs to be sent to the client, a deposit sent from the client, and a pre-intervention plan set up. The interventionist also needs to have a good idea of appropriate treatment facilities for the client and an escort plan to transport the client to the facility chosen. Successful interventions are well planned and thought out in advance.

  1. Don’t trust what you hear; trust what you see!

Often family members will be the initial contact with the interventionist. The family may think that they’re providing concrete facts, but more often than not, their facts are not one-hundred percent accurate. They may be enablers who have been manipulated by their addicted loved one. Perhaps the family has been lied to about the facts. The referral resource just simply may not know the facts. Even when the interventionist communicates directly with the addicted family member, they still may not get to the truth. Interventionists must trust their instincts and use all of their professional skills to make decisions on the client. Remember that body language is 55%, tones and inflections 38%, and the spoken word only 7% of trusted human communication.

  1. Interventionists don’t react on emotions.

An intervention is loaded with emotions, tears, yelling by family members, and anger. The interventionist stays professional and never reacts based on emotion. Interventionists rely on their training, experience, common sense, and wisdom. Interventions can become very heated between loved ones, prepare the family that you may ask certain people to step outside if their actions interrupt the positive flow of the interventionist’s progress. Interventionists remain professional at all times; they never get pulled into the family’s drama.

  1. Professional interventionists have to be able to understand family dynamics.

T he interventionist must be able to identify and understand the dynamics of each family unit. This information is invaluable as a tool for the interventionist’s success in handling the client and the outcome of the intervention. Most important is finding out who the enabler or enablers are in the family unit. The enabler can sabotage the whole intervention if not identified and handled. The hero in the family is another key player in the family unit. The hero will assist in the intervention with blocking the enabler. To have a successful intervention, the other players worth identifying are, the family mascot, the scapegoat, the lost child, and of course the addict or addicts. The intervention will use all this information to their advantage and even set the room up for success with a door blocker, spacers, leader, and enforcer within the family units. The Addictions Academy breaks down family dynamics in-depth during their training courses for professional intervention students.

  1. Professional interventionists must know how to identify and handle different types of clients.

All clients are not the same! Some of the basic characteristics that interventionists screen for are genetic factors, emotional stress, psychiatric problems, and unresolved issues from the client’s past. Types of clients can include the following

ANGRY DEFIANT CLIENT

RUNNER/PHYSICAL

COMBATIVE/ CLIENT

DEPRESSED CLIENT

MENTAL HEALTH CLIENT

ASPBERGERS/AUSTISTIC CLIENT

CHRONIC PAIN

PHONE/TEXTING TYPE CLIENT

CODEPENDENT CLIENT

NARCISSITIC CLIENT

EXECUTIVE CLIENT

WEALTHY CLIENT

CRIMINAL CLIENT

PHYSICAL ISSUES CLIENT

Expert interventionists must be able to master dealing with and identifying all the different types of clients and adjust their intervention process accordingly. The Addictions Academy will instruct their students on the proper procedures for handling these types of clients and role play and rehearse handling these types of clients.

  1. Plan on a smooth intervention and be ready for a rocky one.

Interventionists must be ready for the curve ball, the fastball, and the slider!  Anything can and will happen during an intervention. The interventionist must be on their toes at all times. No physical violence should be tolerated! The police may have to be called if things get out of control. They must make sure that everyone is safe. The interventionist may have to deal with denial, anger, verbal abuse, accusations, and must be prepared to follow through with consequences. The interventionist never really knows how things will go in advance. The main point is that they are ready to handle the worst possible situation and hope for smooth sailing.

  1. The interventionist must remain positive at all times.

No matter what happens, the interventionist should always remain positive and hopeful toward solution for the clients. The family has been through very hard and emotional times, they may quickly become negative. The interventionist can help set the tone and mood for the intervention by remaining positive. This should lead to a good outcome.

   9.    There are several different models of interventions.

There is a simple intervention: One person confronts addicted person Plan on a smooth intervention and be ready for a rocky one.

A Classical Intervention: educating the family, pre-intervention.

A Family System Intervention: Multiple family members addicted.

A Crisis Intervention: Stabilize the situation quickly, rehabilitation follows.

Johnson Model (Surprise Model): Often used by Interventionists.

The Arise Model: Involves the addicted person from the beginning.

The Invitational Intervention Model: Involves the whole family.

Systemic Intervention Model: Focus is on the family, highly successful with process addictions

The RAAD Intervention Model: Reading the client, assessing the situation, anticipating client needs, and directing the flow.

Depending on the situation and the client, some models are more appropriate than others for specific situations. The Addictions Academy uses the RAAD model of intervention in most cases. You will learn about all the above listed intervention models during their training.
