The Ten Greatest Reasons to Hire a Professional Coach

The Ten Greatest Reasons to Hire a Professional Coach

sign post -guidance

What is the benefit of hiring a Professional Coach in any field: Life Coach, Business Coach, Fitness Coach, Recovery Coach, Family Recovery Coach, or any other specialized coach?

I get asked this question quite often from both sides of the equation: as an instructor of Professional Master Coaches, and as a successful business woman who utilizes a Professional Coach.  I’ll share with you my top ten reasons why I believe anyone should hire a Professional Coach.

Hello I am Your Coach
Before I share my thoughts with you on the top ten reasons to hire a Professional Coach, I want to define what a Professional Coach is and what they do.

A Professional Coach is:

A highly trained and very skilled individual
A professional with tools to get the job done
A very motivated individual who motivates others
An ethical and responsible person
A caring people person
A very advanced cheerleader
An action-oriented problem solver
A flexible, goal-driven communication specialist
A perception and perspective changer
A blockage buster and solution finder
It’s also important to look at what Professional Coaches are not to truly understand who they really are.

A Professional Coach is not:

A banker or accountant
A therapist or counselor
A sponsor or twelve-step guide
A psychiatrist
A goal or objective setter
A date or romantic interest
A party pal
A person with a conflict of interest in relation to a client
An uneducated or untrained individual
Interested in selfish, unethical, or illegal matters
Now that I have identified what a Professional Coach is and is not, I would like to describe what a coach does.  Coaching is a results and client driven process where the coach assists the client to reach a solution.  It is a development or training process where a client receives support while working towards goals and objectives via specific action plans, where the coach utilizes core competencies, skill sets, and tools to help the client see past blockages and reach solution or meet goals.  There are many different types of coaching:

Coaching Types and Styles:

1. Business Coaching
2. Recovery Coaching
3. Christian Coaching
4. Executive Coaching
5. Life Coaching
6. Financial Coaching
7. Health and Wellness Coaching
8. Fitness coaching
9. Relationship Coaching
10. Personal coaching
11. Family recovery coaching

There are many different types and styles of coaching; the largest difference today is peer coaching and Professional Coaching.  The difference is just like it sounds, peer coaching is peer to peer often volunteer, and Professional Coaching is a highly trained and skilled individual and almost always paid for their services. Professional Coaches use a range of communication skills such as active listening, powerful questioning, paraphrasing, the natural laws of cause and effect, reading body language, tones, and inflections, observation, intuition, action planning, and other activities. Professional Coaching helps an individual to identify their capabilities and skill sets that already exist internally and put them into motion to reach solutions in all coaching fields.

Now I’ve identified what a Professional Coach is and isn’t and what they do. You have to be prepared before you execute; now you’re ready to get the information you’ve been waiting for. What are the ten greatest benefits of hiring these highly trained and skilled individuals?

  • Every problem has a solution because the problem defines the solution; there is perspective and perception problems that block most clients from getting to solutions on their own, Profession Coaches help clients get past these blocks and reach solutions.
  • We all are human, thus we all suffer from the human condition. We all have blind spots; Professional Coaches can help clients can point out areas of weakness that clients miss or don’t see.
  • We all need someone to hold us accountable. Clients can take on greater responsibility by meeting with their coach on action plans with specific time tables and follow-up.
  • A Professional Coach will help redirect the client when they are off track with their action plan. The coach is trained to be flexible; however, to keep the plan moving forward toward solution.
  • A Professional Coach is trained to bring out the very best in the client through communication skills and other coaching techniques. The client won’t just be spinning in circles, but actually, always moving forward toward solution.
  • The coach brings extra talent to the table. When the client sets the goal, then the coach and client brainstorm together to reach solution; there is twice the creativity.
  • We all need spiritual sounding boards in our lives. Even coaches need coaches! I haven’t met a highly successful person yet who doesn’t have a coach!
  • Professional Coaches celebrate all the victories with the client, no matter how big or small. A win is a win!
  • Clients can communicate with their coach in confidence and confidentiality. The coach will always be supportive and non-judgmental. The coach may suggest change; however, it will be in a positive and nurturing way.
  • Professional Coaches get results! They bring out the best in clients and expect the champion from within to show him or herself.

This really is a no brainer!  If you could achieve your goal, increase your bottom line, lose those pounds, win that championship, or at least increase your chances for success, wouldn’t you do what it takes?  Professional Coaches make all the difference!

Excerpt from Off the Drugs, onto the Cupcakes

The New York Times

“Once off the drugs, the brain craves the uber rewards of the hyperpalatables — Mint Milanos, Oreos, any sugar. An apple’s reward doesn’t cut it,” said Dr. Pamela Peeke, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and author of “The Hunger Fix.”

“So you end up with the transfer addiction,” she added. “Off the cocaine, onto the cupcakes.”

Research has found that food and drugs have similar influence on the brain’s reward center. A 2013 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that sugar, not fat, stimulates cravings.

And a widely cited study from that year found that Oreo cookies activated the nucleus accumbens, the brain’s pleasure or reward center, as much as cocaine and morphine, at least in laboratory rats.

This has an effect not only on the addict’s neural pathways, but also on the addict’s psyche and self-esteem.

The Addictions Coach: Top Five Careers That Suffer From The Highest Rates of Illegal Drug Use and Alcohol Abuse.

The Addictions Coach: Top Five Careers That Suffer From The Highest Rates of Illegal Drug Use and Alcohol Abuse.

Large group of people representing diverse professions including

Different careers have different rates of drug and alcohol abuse. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration found the top five careers that suffer from the highest rates of illegal drug use and alcohol abuse. To compare, the US national average for drug and alcohol abuse and use is 8.7 percent.
Number 5 on the list was Installation, Maintenance and Repair.  These workers usage was above the national average at 9.5 percent. Installers and maintenance people have a lot of freedom from supervision and bounce from job to job during a work day. This contributes to on the job usage. High stress and customer relations also contribute to drug and alcohol use in this profession.
The career with the fourth highest rate of illegal drug use and alcohol abuse is Sales. Sales came in with a 10.3% usage. One main contributor to this career’s drug use is the almighty dollar being the highest of concern. Most employers will turn a blind eye to drug use as long as money is coming through the door.  Also, long hours and work weeks contribute to employees “letting loose” during and after work hours.
Number 3 on the list is Entertainment, Sports and Media. Many people think this should be number one on the list but it is not, as this career choice is at a 12.4% usage and abuse rate. The sports industry has a high level of steroid use which counts as illegal drug use and pushes this group of professions up to number 3. And in the entertainment industry cocaine, heroin and meth are running rampant.
Number 2 on the list is the Construction trade. The construction industry comes in at a very high 15.1 percent which is nearly two times the national average for usage and abuse.  A modern movement for a drug free workplace is attempting to lower these numbers but it is still at an alarming rate.  Alcohol and prescription pills top the list for most construction workers.
And at the top of the list…
Number 1 on the list: The granddaddy of them all! The profession with the highest rate of workers who used and abused drugs and alcohol is the Food and Restaurant industry. This career choice is at an alarming 17.4% usage and abuse. The reasons for this areThe  restaurants are less likely to perform drug tests and are very lenient on hiring people with shady backgrounds. Also, most restaurants have bars and it is very easily accessible to drink on the job. Late night hours, odd hours and a chaotic work environment contribute highly to drug and alcohol abuse in this trade.
As you can see from this article, drug and alcohol abuse does not discriminate on any type of worker in today’s workforce but there are certain circumstances which contribute to some career paths having a higher rate of drug and alcohol abuse.
So what do you do if you are in these trades? You hire us, of course!  We are, The Addictions Coach. Cali Estes and her team of seasoned professionals can assist you with the addictions that have destroyed your life or are currently destroying your life.   Top Rated Addiction Recovery and Sober Coaching Services 1.800.706.0318

 Food for Thought

Food addiction can be very deadly! We hear about substance abuse and alcoholism all the time; literally someone dies every minute from abusing these chemicals. Food addiction can be just as deadly and leads to all kinds of medical problems, obesity, depression, guilt, shame, and suicide. Living with a food addiction is like starring in a horror movie!

There are several types of food addictions, each resulting in very significant physical and emotional problems. I want to focus on three very serious food addictions here. There are those that suffer from compulsive overeating or binge eating disorder. This individual will eat very quickly and eat past the point of being uncomfortably full. This type of binging is usually followed by a period of depression and feelings of guilt and shame.

Compulsive overeaters generally don’t engage in purging behaviors, laxative use, or fasting. They will eat when they’re not hungry, obsess about food, and fantasize about secret plans to eat alone. Compulsive overeating will almost always lead to obesity and weight gain. Unable to control their food intake, these individuals often unsuccessfully diet. They may lose a few pounds in the beginning, but usually end up gaining weight in the long run. Medical complications come with the drastic changes in weight. The weight gains interfere with work, relationships, and their self-esteem. If this disease is left untreated, it can lead to serious medical conditions including heart disease, clinical depression, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, bone deterioration, stroke, kidney problems, and high cholesterol. Please note that not everyone who is obese is a compulsive overeater.

Bulimia Nervosa can be a very dangerous and devastating problem characterized by periods of binge eating followed by a vicious cycle of trying to stay thin and the compulsion to binge eat again. The individual has feelings of panic, guilt and shame. They try to regain control by vomiting, using laxatives.

Common thinking of someone suffering from Bulimia:

An all or nothing mindset.

Eating until they get or feel sick.

Fear that they can’t stop when eating.

Life is dominated by food.

Obsessive thinking about body image and weight.

Always dieting or binging.

Feelings of depression, shame and guilt.

Dishonesty with friends and family about eating habits.

Purging and taking laxatives to try to lose weight and get control back.

Very secretive about eating.

Eating monstrous amounts of food at one sitting.

Disappearing into the bathroom after meals.

The smell of vomit on person or in house.

The effects of Bulimia can be catastrophic: swelling of extremities, weakness, dizziness, ruptured stomach, acid reflux, loss of menstrual cycle, chronic sore throat, abdominal pain and bloating, eye problems, heart attack, low self-esteem, poor image, depression, and more. Note, not all individuals purge who suffer from Bulimia.

Anorexia Nervosa is a progressive disorder that can be fatal, that is characterized by a fifteen percent below average normal body weight and an extreme fear of fat. The individual feels like they’re fat even though they are very under weight. They establish control and a false sense of power by not eating. They drive out thoughts and feelings in the process and may use diuretics, enemas, extreme exercise, laxatives, purging and other behaviors to try to run from fat and create emotional control. They have a much distorted body image, a horrible fear of gaining any weight, and they refuse to maintain a healthy body weight.

Common thinking of Anorexic person:

Feels power when starving.

Their weight is their self-worth.

They feel fat even when they are skin and bone.

They are in terrible fear of gaining any weight at all.

They lie about their eating habits.

They compulsively purge, exercise, diet when they don’t feel good about themselves.

They feel out of control, lonely, insecure, depression, and fat.

They feel like they have to be perfect at everything.

They feel powerless, but can control what they eat.

They don’t have to deal with emotions.

The effects of Anorexia are life threatening! It can cause heart attack, stroke, weakness, dizziness, stomach problems, menstrual problems, death, kidney problems, and major problems of the entire body! Hair can fall out, teeth can fall out, bones become brittle and break, many, many problems.

Counselors, dieticians, doctors, psychologists, coaches, case managers, and family should all be a part of the recovery team. Food addiction affects the body, mind, and spirit of the individual. They will need to return to a healthy body weight by starting to slowly eat more food and change the way that they think about food and self. A nutritionist or dietician will teach the individual about healthy eating, proper nutrition, meal plans, and how to reach and maintain a normal and healthy weight. A counselor will help the individual to identify the negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and replace them with positive ones. The counselor will also work on emotions and relationships. The doctors will address and stabilize the individual, checking for serious health conditions and hospitalize the patient if needed until they reach a less critical weight. Out-patient can be an option if the person is not in an emergency status.

The exact cause of food addiction remains a mystery! It really depends on the person and the type of food addiction. There is a significant element of emotions to all food addictions: guilt, shame, depression, and low self-esteem. Shame about body image, not fitting in, not good enough, and a need for love and validation is the theme of most food addicts. Maybe that’s why they use the term “comfort foods!” I hope this is food for thought!
