My name is Cassidy and I’m a recovered alcoholic and drug addict. To be recovered is to no longer suffer from a hopeless state of mind and body, meaning that I no longer struggle with the mental obsession to drink and drug to get through each moment of each day. This relief is more than I could’ve ever asked for.

In active addiction, I couldn’t get out of bed without putting a substance in my body. Even before the physical withdrawals set in, my mind would be obsessing over getting my next fix. I didn’t care about getting to work, paying my bills, or seeing my family because nothing was more important to me than my drugs. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t scrounge up enough mental strength to not get drunk or high.

Time and time again I would promise myself that I wouldn’t get high that day. I could never last more than an hour or two before I was mindlessly drinking or drugging once again. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I saw others sitting at the bar, having a drink and leaving the second glass half full. It still astounds me to this day how normal people can drink half of a cocktail and throw the other half out. To me, that is wasteful. I can’t fathom wasting alcohol like that, because I am not normal. I am an addict and an alcoholic, and to me, there is always the desire for more.

Eventually, drugs and alcohol became too much for me to handle. I had lost everything in my life. I had no friends, I had nowhere safe to lay my head at night, I couldn’t maintain a job, and my family was convinced that I was going to die. I reached a point of emotional emptiness and became extremely suicidal, but couldn’t get the strength to kill myself.

I finally went to detox to clear my system of drugs and alcohol followed by three months of inpatient dual-diagnosis treatment. In treatment, I did group therapy where I learned how to build sober relationships with sober people, individual therapy where I worked through traumas of my past, and holistic therapy where I was introduced to yoga and meditation. Through the different tools and techniques I was taught in treatment, I was able to develop a sober, healthy lifestyle.

I use my relationships with sober people to learn from them. I can learn from their experience of what worked for them to keep them sober, as well as what did not. I learn from others experience so that I never have to use drugs or alcohol again. I have built these relationships on the basis of honesty and integrity. When I was in active addiction, my relationships were based on what I could get out of them. I was dishonest and manipulative, which only led me to loneliness and despair. Through genuine relationships, I have a sober support system that holds me accountable. Not only do they check up on me to make sure I am okay, but they listen and understand when I need somebody to talk to.

I have incorporated healthy habits into my lifestyle today. I regularly exercise, meditate, do yoga, and try my best to eat healthy. I didn’t care about my mental or physical health because drugs were the only thing that was important to me and I didn’t care if I lived or died. Today, I am grateful for the second chance that I have been given at life, so I take care of my mind and my body by using these healthy habits.

The biggest gifts I have experienced in sobriety is the trust and love I get to experience today. My family trusts me again, and I have the privilege of being an aunt to my two beautiful nieces. I get to be emotionally present to support my family when they struggle with health issues instead of running away to go get high. I get to help others get sober today, by telling them my story and guiding them in their journey to recovery. There is nothing more magical than watching a hopeless individual have the light come back on in their eyes and the color come back to their skin. I get to watch people recover today and live a life filled with love and joy.

Are addiction rates increasing?

Unfortunately, yes. The last 15 years the rates of addiction have grown dramatically in the US. It has become an epidemic that is affecting people from all walks of life. Addiction presents in so many ways, that it’s very difficult to get an accurate statistic, but it’s stated that addiction affects 1 in 4 families. We are currently in the middle of the greatest drug epidemic in our history. The opioid crisis claimed 72,000+ lives in 2017 in the US. Up from 64,000+ in 2016. With the rise of fentanyl laced drugs the overdose rate will be much higher in 2018. These numbers only represent opioid overdoses, not other illicit drugs.

With addiction rates increasing, there is also a rise in addiction recovery advocacy and treatment. Organizations are growing and fighting addiction on the front lines. Addiction treatment is becoming more affordable and more available. 10 years ago, a client may have to wait weeks to find treatment. Now help is typically a phone call away. Addiction treatment has also expanded past the usual AA based recovery programs. Scientific advancement has helped MAT (medically assisted treatment) programs to grow and have higher long-term success rates. More and more treatment centers are starting to stray away from the AA based programs and are starting to work more with the client on an individual basis to meet the client where they’re at.

Rise of Recovery Coaching and non-clinical programs is important as we see addiction rates increasing. Recovery coaching has grown in recent years to combat the ever-growing addiction epidemic. People from all over the world are using their experience with addiction, and proper training to be able to offer these services. Recovery Coaches use certain skills and their own recovery experience to help the client meet their recovery goals.

Addiction is all over the headlines. As more and more families come forward with the struggle of having a loved one who is addicted, it’s more important than ever to discuss what helps people to stay sober. Addiction recovery tools are the things that people in recovery use every day to help themselves stay sober. Let’s talk about what these are.
Sober network – This is a great addiction recovery tool. Most addicts feel very alone. They have spent years using alone and denying themselves healthy supportive relationships. In early recovery it’s important to find other people in recovery to share their experience with and not feel judgement. This is very helpful to people, mostly because people who aren’t addicted don’t exactly understand what they have been through. People in recovery do very well in environments where they fit in. They do very well being surrounded by like minded people.
Another great addiction recovery tool is to join self-help groups – We have all heard of AA (alcoholics anonymous) and NA (narcotics anonymous.) These are the most common forms of self-help groups for people who suffer from substance abuse issues. They are very helpful in the sense because they offer a modality of recovery that works for most people. Aside from AA and NA, there a few other self-help groups someone can attend. Smart Recovery is and up and coming form of self-help that teaches self-empowerment, and self-motivation. Smart-recovery is NOT the same as AA! Moderation Management, and Harm-reduction are both forms of self-help that don’t require complete abstinence, rather they teach how to use less, or teach control over a substance.
Another addiction recovery tool is to hire a Recovery Coach. This is a great addition to your addiction recovery tool toolbox. Recovery coaches are typically people who are in recovery, and that have training to practice as a coach. They use their skills and experience to help their clients achieve the goals in recovery and life that they want. Recovery coaches are flexible in their availability.

How does addiction affect the family?  It’s no secret that addiction is absolutely crippling to those who are suffering, but what people don’t typically talk about is the families that are left to clean up the messes of their addicted loved ones. Addiction is a family dilemma. It creates rifts in the family consisting of fear for their loved ones life, lack of trust, and trauma. These struggles within the family don’t immediately go away after their loved one finds recovery. It may sometime take years for the whole family to heal.

Addiction and the one abusing –

In modern times, the typical addict has moved from the inner cities to the suburbs, and is affecting all types of families. While it’s difficult to specify where addiction begins, it’s definitely easy to identify the consequences of it. From the outside looking in, family members can see their loved ones destroying their lives. What happens is they start to blame their loved one, and then they blame themselves. As their loved one falls deeper in their decent into addiction, the loved ones begin to feel hopeless. They stay up at night worrying, and their whole lives turn into obsession over their loved one. Meanwhile, the addict doesn’t realize what’s happening to the family. If they are fortunate enough to get treatment and get sober, it takes a long time for the family to heal.

How Addiction affects the family –

Every family is different. Which means there’s no “cookie-cutter way” to handle an addiction. Very often families believe the decisions that they are making are in the best interested of their loved one. However, enabling is very common in families that struggle with an addicted loved one.  Family members may want to help by any means necessary. Maybe by sending them money, or paying their phone bill, or bailing them out of the drunk tank. While these things do seem harmless, they can potentially allow their loved one to continue using. Some of the hardest decisions will have to make in an addicted family will cause their loved ones to be angry and lash out. What’s important to remember is that there’s no correct way to handle addiction.

The families’ addiction – how does addiction affect the family?

Sometimes the loved ones of a person struggling with addiction become “addicted” to their loved one. This is most common in marriages. What happens is through years of someone abusing alcohol or drugs. Their loved on becomes addicted to helping them, addicted to saving them from themselves. An addict will always stay close to the one who enables them the most. They both become very sick. Loving an addict is one of the hardest things someone can go through. Feelings like guilt and fear overcome all else. Every decision made either makes the family member feel guilty for enabling, or hurt for telling their loved one no. Financial stress comes as well. Addiction takes a dramatic toll on the families. Money gets spent that wasn’t supposed to. Possessions may go missing. Jobs may be lost. Fighting breaks out constantly. Holidays and birthdays are painful, or maybe get past by without noticing. Anniversaries and public events become embarrassing. But as someone who loves and addict, the family member will do whatever they can to cover these things up. Addiction is a family disease. It isn’t until there are drastic consequences, or proper intervention that things begin to change.

Everyone has been looking for the cure to addiction or overcoming the perils of addiction for decades.  Some have claimed that a shot or a new pill can stop you from craving drugs and alcohol and others have declared that complete abstinence is the only way. Can addiction be overcome? Yes, it can. The question is how you proceed to work on it.

Step 1 is to get to the root cause of the issue. Addiction is not the problem, it is the solution to a problem. Most treatment centers do not treat the cause, they treat the solution. Meaning they get you to admit you have an issue and then focus on the issue (I am an addict) not the underlying cause.  You need a program that addresses the actual cause.  If you know WHY you use drugs and alcohol, and you solve those issues your need to use drugs and alcohol will organically go down.

Step 2 is learning how to be comfortable. There are many ways to solve those underlying issues, since we treat addiction as a coping mechanism, meaning that when you feel uncomfortable you get high or drunk, you need to learn to be comfortable in different situations. Learning new coping skills and life skills are paramount, but addressing the underlying cause using CBT, DBT, EMDR and life coaching is key.  Recovery coaching is one powerful way to focus on goal setting, accountability, and behavioral management.

Step 3 Understanding the new circumstances and applying what you have learned. Whether you are harm reduction or abstinence-based you need to apply the tools you received. There is no one way to get over an addiction, but you do have to make changes in your life. Perception is reality and if you perceive that you can not create a better life than you won’t. Some people use meetings and 12 step, some use yoga and fitness, some go to church, the point being that to overcome an addiction you need to try something different.

Step 4 is moving on to the rest of your life. Some people get stuck in just going to meeting after meeting and never go past the ‘one day at a time’ concept. You need to plan and create goals. Addiction recovery coaches can help you plan 3, 6, 9, 12-month goals and even help you create a vision board to create purpose and passion in your life.

So can addiction be overcome? Yes, it can. With the right help, the right mindset and tackling your demons you can overcome anything.

Addiction can be treated in many different ways. The most traditional ways include detox, inpatient rehab, PHP (day treatment) and IOP (intensive evening outpatient). Most treatment centers are focused on abstinence-based programming but lack the most up to date alternatives, including harm reduction strategies, cannabis, MAT programs, brain health, nutrition/fitness programming and more.

Traditional 12 step, Minnesota Model treatment is antiquated.  White knuckling and hitting bottom are things of the past. Here is the break down of how we can treat addiction:

Therapy –can include CBT, DBT, EMDR, and more. The purpose of therapy to treat addiction is to handle the demons that hold you back. Addressing trauma, PTSD, and the underlying cause of why you use drugs and alcohol to cope with life are keys to changing the behaviors of drug and alcohol use.

Coaching –is one of the most powerful ways to get unstuck. Coaching focuses on the now and the future, while therapy focuses on the past. Coaches will hold a client accountable and assist them in goal setting, goal planning, understanding how to create purpose and passion in life and move forward. Teaching a client healthy coping skills and life skills is paramount in understanding how to stay sober in a world where addiction is everywhere.

Brain Health – After using drugs and alcohol, your brain will have issues with neurotransmitters. You may be feeling foggy, unhappy, depressed and often sluggish. Addressing the serotonin-dopamine connections in the brain and replenishing the depleted ones will make you feel more focused and centered. It will take time to replace and replenish all the issues in the brain that were created from use, but with proper supplements, the brain can be reset.

Cannabis- Recently Cannabis and CBD oils have been used to treat opiate detox symptoms and also alleviate anxiety, PTSD and more. Cannabis has restorative properties that alleviate anxiety and restless legs, nausea, brain fog, and night sweats. Addiction can be treated with medical cannabis and CBD very easily.

MAT- Medically Assisted therapies like Suboxone, Methadone, and Vivitrol have been on the rise to assist clients in getting over the hump from using opiates to sobriety. Some clients are on long-term MAT to keep them off the streets from heroin usage. Sometimes MAT is used for detox only followed by therapy and coaching.

Nutrition/Fitness – Combatting the damage done to your body by utilizing food as medicine and also exercise to refuel and refresh your body is key to treating addiction.  If you feel good, you will look good and you will be in a better space to get your goals and action plans accomplished.

So, Can addiction be treated? Absolutely and in many different ways and on many different levels. The Addictions Coach can assist you in all of the above and help you get on your path to health and wellness.

This is probably the biggest question that is currently asked. Everyone wants to know if there is an addiction cure.  There are many pathways to getting and staying sober, but no one size fits all. Some people will need to be totally abstinent and some will use medically assisted therapies, like Suboxone, Vivitrol, and methadone. Other people will utilize exercise, nutrition, and wellness to combat the demons of addiction.

You can search google for the question to ‘can addiction be cured’ and you will probably pop up a treatment center claiming that there is a cure to addiction, or a fix or some magic potion to end the craziness. The truth is, there is no cure for addiction.  No one method will work for everyone but one key fact to stopping use for good is tackling brain health issues.

Brain Health is the key to stopping cravings that come with staying sober for a long time. Dopamine and Serotonin are the key transmitters that are the happy chemicals key to mood and mental health balance.  While addressing brain health is important, it will not cure the addiction in the brain. It will make you feel better, less foggy, less moody and of course less likely to relapse.

Therapy and coaching will assist you in handling coping skills, life skills and triggers.  Relapse prevention education and anger management skills along with problem-solving skills will assist you in combating your addiction demons. Utilizing these modalities to get to the root cause of why you use drugs and alcohol to deal with issues and life experiences can be a profound way to solve the causes of the addiction, lessening the actual use of drugs and alcohol.

Right now there is no cure for addiction it is hard work, brain health supports, addressing the root cause of the addiction will assist you in getting into a better headspace, less stress and more enjoyment of life. Solve the problems you can now and learn new ways of living and addiction will as close to cured as you can get.
