Outraged about ‘Insatiable’? That might be exactly what Netflix wanted. Meanwhile, Dr. Cali Estes – an addiction and mental health specialist who works regularly with clients battling eating disorders – explained that the fury towards the show could be misplaced. “We should acknowledge this show for what it is, a show that highlights how poorly we treat others based on their image. We should focus less on the character with the eating disorder and more on how society chooses to treat her.”
Before becoming a doctor, Estes had fallen prey to a diet pill addiction that nearly cost her her life and as such, she described herself as someone “who can empathize with the primary character” of Insatiable and that she has “a deep appreciation for the storyline” of the show. “It’s clear to me Patty struggled with an addiction to food and was able to overcome (it) . . . Any ‘fat girl’, myself included, that has been bullied such as Patty was would come back with a vengeance. Read more.

Dr. Cali Estes featured in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Weekly
Cali Estes, Ph.D., a nationally prominent counselor and recovery coach who works a great deal with young people categorized under the “failure to launch” label, told ADAW she has seen some patients whose gaming pursuits have interfered greatly with key domains of their life. “I think they should have come out with this [classification] years ago,” Estes said.
Sign of the times Estes believes the emergence of problems she has seen with some young people around gaming reflects a cultural phenomenon that seems to value instant gratification over genuine human interaction. Even participation in seemingly innocent online games can begin to affect other areas in a young person’s life, she said. From a socioeconomic standpoint, she sees young people who have been given a great deal materially by their parents as being particularly susceptible to problematic gaming behavior. She suggests to adults, “Don’t park your child in front of the TV as a babysitter,” saying, “This can quickly morph into gaming.” Read more.

Who She Is and How She Has Broken Limits:
“Cali Estes, Ph.D is a highly sought after Celebrity Addiction Therapist and Life Coach who blends talk therapy with forward and positive change to assist her clients in unlocking their true potential. She works with individuals, drug and alcohol treatment teams and addiction professionals looking to advance their knowledge base.
After two decades working as a Sober Coach, Dr. Estes learned that there was a high demand for mobile treatment; whether by high profile clients who require discretion and/or those who need help on the road, like traveling musicians. Therefore, Dr. Estes founded Sober on Demand, a concierge private alternative to traditional substance use treatment for the discerning individual or one that rejected in-patient treatment. However, this method of treatment is frowned upon by AA practitioners as it is not a part of the 12 Step program. Regardless, Dr. Estes has continued on and believes treatment professionals should do what ever it takes to help their patients achieve and maintain sobriety- regardless of the program. She truly pushes the limit and fights for her clients despite the ridicule received by her fellow addiction professionals.
Dr. Estes has over 20 years experience working with drug, alcohol and food addictions. Her deep understanding of drug and alcohol addiction, including the behaviors and ramifications that are associated with it, place her at the top in the field of addiction therapy. Her unique no-nonsense approach of cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology and life coaching combine to provide the perfect support for an addict. Dr. Estes’ background in food addictions and the emotional and physical tolls it takes on one’s psyche and physical well-being is highly unique.”
Here Are The 3 Most Important Lessons I Learned From My Experiences:
1. Not everyone wants you to succeed. Female entrepreneurs in the addiction space are in for a treat when you encounter the ‘good old boys’ mentality. I encountered extreme negativity from the ‘men’ in of power as I founded my own company and was seen as a threat to the current arrangement. l had to put up with everything from competitors trying to discredit me to men (and women) hitting on me and treating me less than professionally. I was able to weather almost 2.5 years of this and break through after establishing and holding my ground.
2. The glass ceiling is low, but it is meant to be broken. I have always said ‘go big or go home’ and when I started to create my company I wanted an army of trained people all around the globe that knew my brand and could vouch for my product and services. We are in 22 countries, 5 languages and offer over 40 classes. We are now the largest online addiction classroom in the world. Had I wanted to settle for just the USA market, like my competitors I would have stifled our growth.
3. Maintain balance. Women have a hard time balancing life and work. As females, we are sometimes expected to keep a household, get the kids off to school, ensure meals are in order, etc. It is tough to balance it all while keeping up with the pulse of running and owning a company. Balance is key so we don’t burn out. I learned how to delegate and not sweat the small stuff.
Matt Bradley, Star of The Deadliest Catch Reveals How He Helps the Still Suffering Addict Find Their Way to a Different Way of Life On Unpause Your Life.
On a recent episode of Unpause Your Life with Dr. Cali Estes, Matt Bradley, star of The Deadliest Catch, discussed How to help the still suffering addict find their way to a different way of life. Bradley also wrote the powerful Forward to Estes’ dramatic book, I Married A Junkie.
According to Bradley, for an addict, everything goes out the window.
Bradley said, “When you’re using, you’re not thinking, “I’m going to get arrested.” You’re not thinking, “We’re going to get caught.” And you’re not thinking, “Child protective services is going to step in and take the kids.” You’re not thinking about any of that. All you’re thinking is that you want to get high and you don’t want to get sick and that’s it.”
When host Dr. Cali Estes asked, “This is the interesting thing and a lot of our listeners will probably think here’s this guy who has the dream job. A lot of people want to do what you do after they’ve watched the show and you’re on TV and here you are doing drugs. You can have everything. You’ve got a beautiful wife, wonderful kids, great house, awesome job. You’re on television and you’re still getting high?”
Estes continued, “Drugs don’t stop. They cross every boundary no matter who you are, what 1 /3 you do or what you have. So what would you tell somebody who’s 19, 20, 21, 25 who is shooting dope? What do you say to them now?”
Bradley answered, “The minute I get loaded, everything I own is worth about $20. It all quickly disappears. Making poor decisions to pick up again. The minute I picked up [drugs] all my decisions are removed from me. I no longer had a choice and I really believed that.”
“And if you’re in the age bracket of 19 to 25 years old and you’re thinking today that you want to stop today, you want to quit today, you want to change your life… It’s possible for any of us. There’s a lot of us that get clean. We stay clean.”
During the interview, Dr. Estes asked, “Now you’re getting into this space of helping people. Tell me what you’re doing in that area. How are you starting to help people in recovery and people getting into recovery?”
Bradley shared, explaining, “I feel like I can carry a pretty powerful message. I have a home group, I have a sponsor, I work my steps. Every time I go [to fish] I get to come home and reinvent my recovery. Right?”
“I’ve been on bowling leagues and softball teams and I’ve done all kinds of different stuff with my recovery and I’ve always found somebody that I thought had some potential. And so I walk them through the 12 Steps, I work with them, and I help get them to meetings. And then when it’s time for me to go fish, I drop them off onto my sponsor or make sure that they have good contact information, in case there are trials and tribulations or even a good day that they need to share it with somebody if I’m not available.”
Bradley went on to explain, “I also do different things today. One of them is a volunteer on a truck. The truck goes to the soup kitchen at three or four different locations here in Washington. And we help the homeless with laundry. The wash truck pulls a fifth wheel trailer and there are a couple of showers for the men and a couple of showers for the women on it and they get their clothes cleaned.”
“And then in that process, I try to talk these homeless folks into a better way of life. I explain that I’ve been in their shoes and I explain I’ve got some stuff today, but you know, I do and I’ve worked for it. Then I help them get detoxed and bring them down to the Salvation Army, which has a six-month treatment facility.”
Matt Bradley attends 12-Step meetings regularly. Matt also co-owns Sky Vapor, Sky Distribution, and Northwest’s Finest E-Liquid.
The interview concluded with Bradley saying “I help lots of addicts find their first meeting, help them find their way into a treatment facility. If you need help, find me on facebook. I try to answer everybody’s questions. I have a lot of resources at my fingertips. If I can’t help you, I know three great men right now that would be more than willing to help you.”

The Scary Truth About Painkiller Addiction
Let’s say you’re in some pain. Maybe you’re recovering from surgery. Or perhaps it’s due to a medical condition that you simply can’t get a handle on. At some point, you’re going to be offered prescription painkillers. Damn straight, they’ll get rid of your pain. But there can also be a significant — and terrifying — cost.
What cost, you ask? Addiction and even accidental death.
Of course, you never bargain for either — you just want your pain to END already. But women are more likely than men to be prescribed these dangerous drugs, and become dependent on them faster.
Here’s everything you need to know about prescription painkillers, including how to stay safe if you absolutely must take them.
10 Ways to Stay Friends When Life Gets in the Way
She’s Dealing With the Death of a Loved One
If your best friend’s lost someone she loves, don’t stay away in fear that you’ll say the “wrong”
thing. What’s more important is “listening and just being there until the person processes the
loss,” explains Cali Estes, PhD, a cognitive behavioral therapist and founder of The Addictions
Coach and The Addiction Academy. “Sometimes just having coffee with them in silence is what
the person needs.”
Your Friend’s Wrestling With an Addiction
Maintaining a friendship with someone who’s has an addiction “can be exhausting,” admits Estes.
You’re gonna need to make — and keep — some strong boundaries. “Don’t give them
money or lend your car or other items,” says Estes. But DO keep offering help. You can even
research local professionals and hand your friend a list of phone numbers. “They may be irritated
with you, but stay the course,” urges Estes. “If they get help, they’ll thank you in the end.”
You’ve Had a Blowout Argument
When you and your closest friend have an argument that’s not easily resolved, “it’s important to
decide if you want to ‘be right’ and ‘win’ or if you want to get a resolution that’s workable,” says
Estes. “You generally don’t get both.” With that in mind, be realistic. “Sometimes you have to
give up control to get the desired result,” Estes notes. And that result, of course, is a friendship

There is a link between substance dependence detoxification, the development of food addiction and the ability to maintain a balanced, sober life.
Produced by Tricia Parido March 3, 2016
The purpose of this study is to validate the relationships between substance dependence, withdrawal, food addiction and recovery. The intention is to show how most afflicted with substance addiction have disordered eating habits that during detoxification turn into highly intense cravings for particular food ingredients. And also to illustrate how these particular attributes can be attributed to increased post-acute withdrawal, relapse, and the development of a potential food addiction.
