5 Elements of an Effective Modern Coach


Coaching may seem easy, especially when you’re coaching enthusiastic clients, but it can be a very difficult profession sometimes. Many coaches can tell you that it can be a very frustrating and thankless job. Coaches usually occupy a visible position and are usually exposed to different kinds of scrutiny. Regardless, there’s so much joy to be attached to coaching as a profession, especially when you are a good and effective coach.

So, what makes a good coach?

  1. Good coaches are able to inspire their clients to believe in themselves, let go of their worries and help them build their self-esteem. Effective coaches help clients to build their self-esteem without head games or by praising clients when they don’t warrant praise. Instead, they use the right foundations of honesty, encouragement and motivation to build their client’s self-esteem.
  2. Effective coaches do not embarrass or humiliate clients in order to teach them. Embarrassment and humiliation are not tools in the arsenal of an effective coach because they undermine the client’s self-esteem and confidence.
  3. Good coaches teach their clients important life lessons as well as skills, techniques and strategy to effectively deal with hardship, failure, setback, as well as important values that may have been missing in their lives like honesty, integrity, etc.
  4. Good coaches can easily understand and take note of the personality and individual differences of their clients which helps them deal effectively with them.
  5. Good coaches are also flexible. They do not stick to one method, approach or practice for dealing with clients even if that approach worked with another client. They use their understanding of individual differences to deal with clients. They are also ready to try different approaches until one works in helping the client.

Elements of an effective work for a modern coach

  1. Good communication skills

As a coach, you must be able to communicate your ideas as well as important concepts to clients. You should have the communication skills that will allow you to effectively communicate with clients verbally and non-verbally. As part of the skill set of communication, a good coach must have good listening skills, after all, to be able to communicate, he or she must be able to understand what the client is trying to say.

Good listening skills allow the coach to detect when he or she should talk and when he or she should just listen, thereby enhancing the process of communication between the coach and client. For example, when a client is describing a decision or action that made him or her regretful, you should be able to listen carefully and distinguish between the facts of that decision and the thought process that motivated the client to act, as well as what brought about the feeling of regret.

An important listening skill is the ability to convey genuine interest in listening to what your client is saying, you need to listen patiently and give clients your full attention. Therefore, an effective coach should have the questioning skills that will allow him to ask questions that produce precise and powerful answers and responses from the client. A coach with effective questioning skills can even get clients to gain insights and clarity into the motivation, intentions and strategy behind the action or event under discussion on their own.

  1. Feedback skills

Feedback skills are an important element to the effective work of a modern coach. This skill allows the coach to provide the right feedback to a client. To do this, you must know when and how to encourage or discourage the client from taking certain actions and provide honest and unbiased feedback which assists clients in determining when they’re wrong or right.

A good coach must also give complete feedback as well, because not all situations are black and white. A one-sided, biased, arrogant or dismissive feedback might end up destroying the trust between the client and coach or the progress of the client. You must also be careful not to assert your expertise, especially when trying to build a working relationship with a difficult client.

  1. Good motivation skills

This is another element of the effective work of a modern coach. A good coach must be able to motivate his or her clients to put his advice to action. Just advising is not enough, you must be able to give clients the right push towards doing the right thing. Some effective coaches who have good relationships with their clients even read this and were able to devise a means to set up reward systems to encourage clients that are doing well.

  1. Good observation skills

A good coach should always be able to step away from the client, after seeing things from the client’s perspective, he or she must be able to look at things from all other possible perspectives. A good and effective coach must be able to observe the client to know how he or she is doing and if he or she is making any progress. A good coach should also be able to detect possibilities and opportunities for change and development of the client.
